Me on Marie Claire - Why is it so special!

My interview with Marie Claire was published in their November issue. The picture there is the 8 months very pregnant me! Its a very special interview not only because many of my friends kept sending me snap shots of my interview, and then there isthe Filipino lady story from the last post! but also because I had my 3rd child in November too! In fact I had my baby after only few hours after reading my interview!

We were in such a rush passing the reception to take the elevator to the 8th floor, my husband noticed the receptionist calling and following us and then went in such a rush back to her desk.We went upstairs and then came down... Thats when the receptionist left her chair grabbed a paper and followed us only to say in her old lady's voice and Filipino accent: Maam is that you ?? i remember you because of your beautiful smile, I saw this in the magazine and I cut it and keep it because I love you!

I was so surprised! I thanked her and told her how happy I am and how she made my day! and left, when we got to the car my husband told me we should've taken a picture with her! OMG I shouted! and ran back inside for a quick picture with her!

Im So glad I did ! because I ended up giving birth to my 3rd child later that day! Now i will never forget that sweet old lady! ever!

Im so impressed with my ability to make short videos LOL It's just that i happen to get bored reading long recipe books or watch long shows about a simple recipe. I like to be inspired and not follow an exact recipe. and that's what im trying to achieve with my super short videos.

My 3rd video is our Mexican Pizza! Authentic Mexican ingredients! We usually make it SPICY for our guests and keep it mild for us. Sometimes we melt some organic REAL cheese on top, but most of the times we dont.

For my first ever cooking video i chose one of my old favorite! Healthy Chickpea Nuggets! I have been sharing this recipe with my students for years and its always such a success! Its very simple very FAST! My son Dhari loves it and always asks me to make it to his friends, mommies who tried it say their kids really enjoyed them with their favorite dip #Yippie. This morning after Fajir prayer I saw this RT. It bothered me so much I kept tossing and turning in bed and finally i decided to get out of bed and say something. Sadly i couldn't keep my reply as short as twitter allows, so I decided to move it to my blog.

A missing child is a no laughing matter, around the world people help find missing children everyday, police around the world urge ppl to be familiar with missing kids pictures coz you never know when u might come across one. a missing child is heart breaking for every person out there, around the world communities are formed just to help find a missing child. most of the time the child is found by ppl not the police. i think its important to educate society to get involved, especially when a child needs to be rescued. the cops find children only by asking other ppl if they've seen him, if ppl say its not my job to help find a missing child then most kids will never find their way back to their parents. i live in he USA and u see missing children's pics everywhere, with your logic one would complain why r parents bothering me with their missing child's pic on my supermarket bulletin board instead of asking the police for help. this partnership between the police and the community can not be degraded or ridiculed, social media means are part of society and its the new web family, if you are only about using social media for business purposes and meeting potential clients then your business has no heart. if u believe in the power of social media for business/entertainment purposes but not on a human level that touches ppl's lives then ur in for a big shock: a hashtag on twitter helped find a missing boy in NYC in just few hours, recently we heard the same story in saudi arabia and it made it to international news, TWITTER HELP FIND A MISSING CHILD, now thats a news flash id be happy to see.

Sometimes ( if not most of the time) we receive Fake missing child msgs in Kuwait, these are very annoying and frustrating, people behind them should be punished. their misuse of technology for their personal entertainment is depriving us from wisely using these means to HELP. personally this is the reason why i never re-broadcasted blackberry missing child msgs or Retweet anything of that sort (SAD).

On a final note, Im sure the person who typed the tweet or the person who retweeted it are not horrible monsters with no feelings, as im sure they were not really comparing a missing child to a "7mart elgayla". I think i understand their feelings because seeing a missing child's photo is so heart breaking, that i wish ive never seen it or ppl would just stop sending it to me.

We came back from the USA not too long ago. Things have been so busy at our bookshop, restocking retailers, delivering orders to teachers, and republishing our best sellers. Kuwait's Crazy drivers are killing us!

During my last visit to Kuwait, my friends uncle passed away in a car crash that was caused by another driver speeding. When i went to pay my condolences I couldn't stop my tears, it was very emotional for me seeing his family. i still think about them a lot. i remember the faces of each and every one of his beautiful family. Allah yer7uma o eyssabberhum.

Its time for us to stop the craziness on the road somehow. its time for all of us to take the responsibility for peoples lives. children loosing parents/parents loosing children; equally heart breaking for me.

Few weeks ago I talked about children's safety in the car on my Marina FM segment. I talked about seat belts and kids car seats. A listener emailed me the next day with a picture of her son in a car seat she bought on the same day she heard me on the radio. I have to admit i teared a little ( a lot) it was so moving to be part of a strangers life like that..

One of the reasons i feel like Im the luckiest person on this planet is the love and appreciation i feel from my students, my published articles readers, and now my listeners on marina FM. To know that you made a difference in a child lifes is an incredible feeling. I love children and my passion for them is beyond this world.

Few days ago a mommy sent me her son's picture in a car seat, safely fastened. I dont know her, but she took the time to email the pictture for me, telling me that she went with her husband to buy it the day she heard my child's safety topic on Marina FM. I teared. its an incredible feeling.

2 weeks ago a dear student who took my family nutrition E-course sent me this link . I have teared when i read what she wrote about me. overwhelmed with joy.

just yesterday a mommy emailed me through my website telling me she gave birth just 7 hours ago, and thanks to my articles that she read while pregnant she is able to eager to complete her healthy breastfeeding journey. I teared A LOT !

I Honestly feel like im The luckiest person on this planet, I am showered with love every day. Thank God for all his blessings and all the super sweet people that come to my life every day.

My little sister came to visit us here in the US after she was in europe with my parents for Eid. Its really important for children to learn about the environment in this day of age. Reuse Reduce and Recycle are not foreign words for the new generations. Protecting the planet is one of my favorite things to discus in my children's book series. In fact we created two books dedicated to this issue.

I didnt want to steal Dhari's thunder but I have some news of my own. Last week was my first time on Marina FM (the new Ladies Diwaniya Show at 12 PM) they are obviously taped segments because of the time difference. Yesterday was my second time on and I have to tell you that Im overwhelmed with kind and sweet feedback through emails msgs tweets facebook u name it.. Im very glad I took this step I believe there are many child care issues that need to be heard in Kuwait; our children deserve no less.

My son was inspired few days ago to start his own youtube channel. My son Dhari is obsessed with recycling, he gets mad at me for throwing away the tiniest thing. he loves being in charge of the bins and categorizing, he even wants to recycle the seeds of the fruits he eats "we can plant them or add them to the compost" he says lol.

what can i say, we are so proud of him ***hug***

First of all, allow me to apologize for any inconvenience caused by my disappearance the past 3 days. It was Columbus day long weekend and we were busy having lots and lots of fun with the kids. Im going to spend this rainy morning replying to all the emails and msgs. My students will have the day off today but im expecting a follow up email tonight. looking forward to that :))

Many innocent people are victims of misleading and misinforming marketing campaigns, trying to sell a product, what ever it may be.

Children seem to be the target most of the time, Im just glad that people are standing up for such schemes and serious measures are being taken all over the world to protect them.

I have posted before about how California is banning fast food chains from giving out toys with the kids meals.

One of the most deceiving and misleading advertisement is to claim that formula can imitate mothers milk, My dear friend Athoob send me this link recently that I thought it was worth sharing here.

My Daughter on Ansam

When our dear Ansam asked if she can post this pic on her blog, I thought she was going to post about President Obama's bad habits and how hes under pressure to make personal changes. Especially that the First Lady has declared war against unhealthy food at childrens schools recently. Our Ansam posted it under the title Junk Vs. Healthy. That titled inspired me to go back to writing published articles. I have stopped writing since the birth of my second child (a baby, a child in school, running a business, running a house i couldn't find the time of energy back then) and now that I'm making time for writing I'm going to make this topic my main focus.

Im so very excited about publishing again, I miss the feed-backs and the emails I receive after each article, I do put lots of effort in each one of my articles and Im So glad people are still reading them. Making a difference in a child's life, its what I live for.

Well, we are all having a lot of fun here in the USA, the country of the friendliest kindest people on earth.

My son is enjoying his friends his school his after school activities.Hes having a blast (every single day), he goes to Karate school, swimming school, etiquette school, and much much more... #HappyBoy

My daughter is making friends everywhere she goes introducing herself to people lol, shes enjoying neighbor's puppies, and she had her first pet here (kitten) .. #Happygirl

My husband is really enjoying his work, I tell him all the time how happy it makes me to see him passionate about what he does, loving what u do turns a job into a hobby. #blessings

Me, Im enjoying it here very much, Im running my bookshop in Kuwait online, working on more projects that will come to live next year in Kuwait, Im also teaching Wholesome Family Nutrition workshops.. sweet neighbors, amazing friends, organic farmer delivering our maachla weekly, the cutest home, weather is beautiful, jogging in the morning is truly a bliss, skyping family and friends in Kuwait all the time.. #living-a-dream

One thing missing though.. let me share a story that happened few days ago...

I was picking up Dhari (who turned 6 years old, cute wiggly tooth and all) from school, where he had the best day, he was also excited about going to pick his Halloween costume in the afternoon.. I asked him, out of no where, if he misses anything about Kuwait? he answered " I miss seeing people nafs lowni"

I dont know why this brought tears to my eyes.. maybe because I do miss my people, elli nafs lowni :")

My Dear friend AThoob, a Kuwaiti mother who lives with her husband and two beautiful daughters in the UK, is starting a life altering campaign in Kuwait all the way from Birmingham! I am so excited about it I cant even describe how proud I am of such an initiative.

It seems to me that mothers more than anyone, always feel like they have the power to change the world. My friend Reem calls them Mompreneurs , No matter how far we are from Kuwait all we think about is how to bring back with us the best of we were exposed to.

Living here in the USA is very inspiring for me. As a member of a mothers club here there is so much i want to bring back home with me. Every day I make time to work on projects for the children of Kuwait. We bring these projects to life when we are actually in Kuwait, Athoob did not wait to go back to Kuwait to spread knowledge about Health consciousness. This is one of the many reasons I am thrilled to be part of the first Kuwaiti Health Campaign of its kind!

I am so happy to see such health movement initiative in Kuwait. As mothers we carry the biggest responsibility on our shoulders to raise our children with better and healthier eating habits and manners. A mother I don't seem to get enough of mentioning her achievements and initiatives is Noura, although Im sad that i didn't get to attend my friends workshop, but I've been floating with happiness hearing all the positive feed backs from parents who attended her "healthy eating kids" workshop. it seems that more and more people are well aware of the rule food plays not only in health and immunity, but also in behavior and emotional development. HOORAY FOR KUWAIT !

My lovely son has attended a wonderful "etiquette and leadership workshop" last week at the PROTOCOL SCHOOL of Texas. We love those kinds of activities, it can actually be an amazing opportunity for parents to meet and the kids to make new friends and learn skills that they can benefit from their whole life.

People often ask me about my son's courtesy and manners. His teachers point out how considerate he is of other peoples feelings. Im surely a proud mom. qualities like caring, sharing, playing fair, taking turns are all important parts of a healthy childhood. kids who don't have social graces are likely to have a more difficult time with friends, family and teachers.

Good manners need to be built and developed when the kids are young, no question about that. parents are the child's first teachers of that, no question about that either. However every concerned parent in Kuwait is ready for such courses for children, installing good manners through such activities can be a great fun for everyone.

Having said all of the above I just have to mention here Ms. Hanadi Khazal - founder of Acanthe School of Etiquette & Protocol. I have heard so much GREAT things about her and I have experienced her politeness first hand when gave me a very gracious phone call few months ago, the lady is charming and charismatic, she just captivates you as soon as she starts talking. Sadly i havent paid her establishment a visit yet since it was launched while we were here. nevertheless I surely hope they consider a youth program ASAP.

MOVIES FOR MOMS ! AND DADS TOO !

Going to a movie and leaving my children behind is not something i would consider doing. So my Husband and I like many parents havent gone for the movies in years..

Im not a movie person anyway i cant stand sitting still for more than 15 minutes. and I cant stand the smell of the movie theater's horrible food.

Then few weeks back, we were in Kuwait and Alice in Wonderland was playing, we thought dhari was old enough for the movies and Alice is really a GREAT first movie! and we made a plan so we can take him to see it. The plan was : we go to my parents, breastfeed my daughter to sleep, then wait for her to wake up fresh and ready to play, then breastfeed her one more time, and beg all my sisters and brother and niece to stay to entertain her. Shes usually well entertained by dad and mom but just to make sure there is a back up if she gets bored, we needed a "villiage", i called my best friend told her about the situation just in case. We bought our tickets online and went to the movie few seconds before it starts, we left right after that and we went straight to pick her up and she was in the garden playing with the cats. Dhari loved the movie and we had so much fun HOWEVER we missed our little angel so much and decided that if there was any other movie that is suitable for Dhari and he wanted to see he can go with one of our friends/family and we would wait for him in the mall with his sister.

Its very hard for us parents to leave our kids to have fun, we like the fun we have with them present better, i guess thats just the way we are build. When your a parent your definition of the word fun changes i guess and you suddenly enjoy a day at the pool with the kids or planting and playing with soil, a day at the park! things that were boring to you before you had kids.

The reason for this post is that i was chatting with my friend whos in LA this evening and she told me she just came back from shrek and they loved it! I told her that i saw my last movie before Dhari was born, she has a son my daughter's age so she told me that she only goes on mommys nights! I SAID WHAT IS THAT!? she told me about a special mommy night at the theater where toddlers and babies are welcome and they even have a changing place for etc and its so much fun for the whole family!! I, told my husband and son right away and they were very excited and googled the movie theaters near us for that and yes apparently its very popular here!!! can you believe this! talk about child friendly environment! and yes we are going to see SHREK this week. YeaY ;)

Other countries are taking serious measures to raise healthier generations, banning fast food chains from giving out toys with the kids meals, limiting their advertisement and banning them from children's TV channels. They are giving restaurants a hard time monitoring the salt and sugar limits , banning fries and enforcing apple sticks instead. banning soda drinks in schools.

I Think in Kuwait, we should not wait for Government/Parliament to make the decision for us, we should not waste our life waiting for a law to protect the health of my child. With scientific research widely available we know exactly what we should be eating/avoiding. As parents we are responsible to educate about the nutritional value of food and help them make a better choice. It is challenging indeed, especially if you are surrounded by family/friends who are putting you down, i receive emails everyday from mommies/daddies who are trying to do the right thing but people around them are making their life harder than it should be.

The good news is, more and more parents are making the switch to a healthier life in Kuwait, more kids are making healthier food choices, most of private schools and teachers are very supportive of that, banning sugars, juice boxes, fizzy drinks from the classrooms. more grandmothers are giving out books and educational toys instead of candy to the precious grandchildren.. so many beautiful images.. that keeps a huge smile on my face :D

We Love Rana

My BFF Nouf asked me who Rana Al-Omani was, after Rana left a comment on my Calcium post from Mayo Clinic.

Ive been meaning to write a post about Rana ever since the day i met her but never had the chance. I first heard her name from my sister who's office was in the building opposite Rana's restaurant Bounjurno. Rana's veg burger was my sisters favorite choice on the days she doesn't get anything from home. my sister told me how nice this Kuwaiti girl who is blond and works at her own restaurant. my sister liked her so much she never ordered anything from anywhere else.

I remember when I left my booth at p2bk ishta and went to hers just to say hi, you notice right away shes a very smiley person, kindness oozes from her beautiful blue eyes and her happiness is contagious ! mashala.

Hard worker, runs her own business, joyful spirit, and a good heart! Rana volunteers with Amal group that works particularly with children cancer patients, I have seen how active and alive she is when i went to drop a heavy box of my books that we donated to a charity event she was organizing. i remember that day very well because it was the night before my flight to the states I had to take the books myself since our driver was lost on the way there and had other deliveries to make. She carried the heavy box herself out of my SUV, waved a Hello to my kids at the back and i remember my son saying after she left "mama ur friend 7ilwa" lol

AND ATHLETIC TOO! many of my friends enjoy her ZUMBA classes in Khaldia. and i have posted about them few times on facebook. Another reason i love Rana so much are the wonderful things Noura says about her. Noura and Rana are very close friends and Noura is always talking about how kind and sweet and amazing Rana is. Rana has been very supportive of Noura's switch to a healthier life, even compliments her new methods of cooking since Noura is trying out some of my recipes. You will find Rana on so many posts on Noura's blog

one more thing about Rana, she is a chocoholic and proud ;) she mentioned that chocolate makes her happy, so if she believes chocolate is the secret behind her contagious happiness and is making her the wonderful person that she is, then its actually working. :D

Hind left this msg last week on my blog that I just had the chance to see today.

I could not believe she thought I might not remember her!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS GIRL! well i know her older sister Dr. N and I absolutely adore her. Another connection to Hind and the reason I love her so much is my BFF and childhood friend Dr. Nada AlRagum, she always shares with me many stories about Hind and tells me how much we are alike and how we share so many ideas and believes, and how amazing she is. for someone whos always in our conversation to think i might forget her hehe

I also was very puzzled (for her thinking i might not remember her) since i have Dr. Hind's number saved on my Cellphone and I do reply to her sms everytime she sends anything. I have her number from a year ago when she invited me for an event they were organizing at the Kuwait's Medicine Society. It was a great charity event and we had few nice chats and my kids loved her! I just found out why my replies never got through to her is because i didnt put the additional 9 in the number! :/

A close friend posted this Mayo Clinic link on facebook today. I just had to re-post it on my blog.

One of the most shocking topics in the courses I teach is chocolate/calcium relation. It is without a doubt a life altering piece of information to my dear students. Especially parents who are health conscious and want to make the best choices when it comes to their children's health.

One of my favorite students who is a mother of two concluded that " then it doesn't make sense to tell my kids they can have their chocolate ice-cream after lunch" or "ill have a hot cup of chocolate milk before going to bed" , it really does not make any sense.

Many of us suffer from poor eating habits we grew up with. We unintentionally inherit them to our children. This can be prevented by not only being well aware of all the facts. but spreading the word so more people understand your decision.. and maybe be inspired to make a little change of their own.

This way parents will feel more connected to the classroom and the child will be encouraged to practice what they learned in school at home. especially when it comes to healthy eating lessons.

I cant describe how much i envy the guys and girls completing in Kuwait's first official triathlon !

My Friend Yasmeen Alabduljader is making me very very jealous, she is so excited preparing for the triathlon.

I also have to thank the founders, the amazing Rabaa Alhajry and Ahmed Almajid, and the coach Ive been hearing a lot about, Daniel Marton.

Sadly, I wont be in Kuwait to witness it. hopefully we will have the chance to be part of the next one ! gotta start training ;)

A Friend of mine lost her son about a month ago whena car hit him crossing the street, I couldnt get myself to write anything about that, but when my dear friend Noura wrote a post about losing her uncle two weeks ago in a car accident, I felt like I have to say something. However, i still cant seem to put words together for this post. so I am quoting his own son:

"Its time to act, your so right about always seeing car accidents along the roads. And people truly do not respect thier own lives, let alone others. Its a shame people can be so careless. Unfortuently, you always think it can never be me. And when it does, Why me? Reality is if we keep going on with this reckless mentality sooner or later it will catch up to you, or someone close to you." - Abdulrahman Alhouti.

going back to work and the decision to breastfeed:

Allow me to congratulate you again, on being a working breast-feeding mom, thats a choice very few women are brave enough to make. the good news is, many women who work long hours in the private sector were able to manage successfully. I wrote few articles on going back to work with a breast-fed baby, and i have shared my sisters unique experiment with that. Im very proud of her for finding a way that worked for her, she used to manually express milk twice- 3 times during her work hours, she use to carry a cooler full of ice with her to work ( people made comments since shes a tiny little skinny person carrying a cooler that is heavier than she is every single day it was very cute and funny) she kept the milk in the cooler and takes it home so it can be given to her daughter while she was at work the next day. her daughter never used an artificial nipple/bottle/pacifier. she made it look very easy and enjoyed every minute of it and the result was a happy smart super immuned child who continued to breastfeed for the recommended amount of time which is 2 years+.she used to drink it from a sippy cup/cup/spoon. going back to work can be a piece of cake if you just sit and find a plan that will work for you.

The sore mom:

when a woman is self educated with only little support from the people around her, have not met women who breastfed successfully or seen a lactation educator, she will probably face few difficulties caused by being misinformed. breast-feeding should not hurt or cause sore nipples or any kind of discomfort. if you suffer from sore/cracked/painful nipples its because of one of these simple reasons:

1. you are using a pacifier (go back to pacifier article for details)

2. u r using a bottle. (go back to breastfeeding articles archive)

3. wrong latch-on: the reason for this most of the time here is using a pacifier/bottle. a simple trick is trying to push the baby's chin gently to open wide, the idea is taking in as much as possible from the areola ( we do not nipple feed, we breastfeed).

My trendy fashionista breastfeeding mommy from my previous post sent me a msg on my blackberry to tell me how bad she felt about a negative comment on her blog. i have looked at the comment and its not negative at all, in fact i have heard it before from sincere loving amazing super moms who were mislead to not breastfeeding successfully. bad advice or insincere guidance thats what most of us get, people jump to share their negative experiences and give you tips on how to parent your child, making you feel breastfeeding is harder than it is and that you may be incapable of it. please Click here for my article titled ما فيني حليب

I have received an extremely kind and sweet email a while ago from a Kuwaiti kindergarten teacher, she mentioned that she started a blog just for her class, post pictures about their activities, show off some of the crafts they made, and how the kids take care of their teeth.

A while ago a teacher from an American school emailed me regarding promoting her blog on my website. I was honestly too busy to be looking at anything except my work mail and my facebook application on my phone. Finally i had the chance to go through it today with my son (who's on spring break), and here is what i think of it.

I think its really refreshing to see more teachers blogging about their school life. Miss Farah seem to be a dedicated teacher. what caught my attention right away is her passion for the school lunch box's nutritional value. she writes about her notes to parents about improving the content of their kids school lunch and snacks, what she finds in the students bags, how she find ways to educate the kids about healthy choices.. She also shares lovely pictures of her beautifully decorated classroom, and so many other topics parents/teachers would be interested in.
